3G Video Calling Mobile Phones in India

A few days back, we posted how you can make free mobile video calls using the voip services like Skype, Fring etc. Also with 3G services launched in India, people are excited about making 3G video mobile video calls. However for making a video call, you require a mobile with front camera. Are you looking for a mobile phone with video calling capabilities, read on!

On checking the internet going through various available options of a mobile phone with front camera, I found that a very limited options are available. You will find very few mobile phones with front camera (In Indian market), which will help you make video calls.

If you are having iPhone4 or a Samsung Galaxy S then you can certainly make video calls but again their price is very high. Most of the 3G, Android phones available in Indian market don't have a front camera. I wonder when companies are offering so many features, why are they not offering front camera for video calls.

You may say that "we can place a video call using the primary camera" but think again, will it make any sense :
1. You face the back of mobile, you won't be able to see the other person. Obviously you wont be using a mirror for that :p
2. Also your primary camera will have high resolution video, image which is not suited for video calling, as the video size will be high and very high speed internet is required to transmit it.

Front camera's are specially made for this option only, so if mobile companies are selling their phone claiming 3G, 3G : why are they not offering front camera.

I also checked the middle range mobile phones (many high end mobiles as well) and they Do not have a front camera (be it HTC wildfire, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy 3,5, LG Optimus, Spice Mi 300, Sony xperia x10 Mini).

So, if you are using a 3G phone with front camera, then please post your reviews. Have you tried making video calls using the primary camera ? Please let us know your feedback in the comment section. Lets discuss more about 3G Video Calling Mobile Phones.

i HAVE USED NOKIA C5 TO NOKIA N8 AND VICE VERSE. BOTH WORKING FINE FOR FRONT FACING CAMERAS.

aLSO I HAVE USED NOKIA N8 TO NOKIA ESERIES MOBILES WITHOUT FRONT FACING CAMERA.. IT WORKS AWESOME.

YOU CAN USE PRIMARY CAMERA, VIDEO CALLING WILL AUTOMATICALLY ADJUST THE VIDEO RESOLUTION AND SIZE..

The reason why you don't see a front calling camera on an Android phone is that current version of Android OS doesn't support front camera calling. Otherwise, it's really cheap to put a front call camera. Imagine when a samsung phone for Rs 3200 can have it, why can't a Rs 10,000 droid have it. It's logical.

@Anony :

Are you sure about info that Android OS does not support front camera calling because some android phones have front camera : Samsung Galaxy S.

Most new phones to be launched also have a front camera. Also if you check Fring, Skype sites they say that they support front camera calling!

But again I am not sure of the reason why high end phones are not having front camera.

Multiple cameras support was introduced only in Android 2.3 Platform. So latest phones will support front side camera and video calling. Some top-end old phones do have inbuilt front camera. They were added by the OEMs for future upgradation. Once the Android Gingerbread software update is available for these phones, you can use them for video calling.

If android 2.3 suports video calling, is it possible to make video cals using back camera? Lik in the post it says bak end high resolution is hard to transmit.... I wud say, do u kno in our phone options v can choose between diff modes lik 8mp, 6mp ,2mp , qvga, vga!!! So v can use vga in 8mp camera... So I tink video calling is posible at vga mode of back end camera.... Am I rite?...
Ok so my question is wil android2.3 let dis option posible in phones without front facing camera? Iam using xperia x10i..with android 2.1.. If someday sony releases 2.3 I wil b lucky...or I may need to use custom 2.3 android. So wat u guys say nw?

I bought K530i Sony Ericsson 3-4 years back, it is 3G enabled with front camera, though I have not tested it with video calling but I am sure it must be good. Now I am planning to buy a new one as this one is old now. Can anyone suggest a Nokia phone that has front camera?

Hello frnds,
micromax A70 and Spice VI 270 both have front cameras. Also video call though internet is supported by yahoo messenger on android FROYO 2.2 and above. Gtalk video call is launched for gingerbread 2.3.4
Fring group video call can be used for upto 4 friends at one time on same screen. I talked with Fring Officials and they told me it works on android Eclair 2.1

I used 3G Video call a Year back(when BSNL launched first) in my Nokia N70. In that time the Quality and clearance are Good, Call charges also reasonable.
Now I am using AirTel 3G, but never called anyone with Video. It is not working properly.
Planning to buy a Good 3G mobile with Front camera for Video call. If anyone using the same, suggest some good mobiles with below 15K

check out the nokia e63. it's got 3G video calling, obviously with a front cam, and is below 8k in most stores!

needed to know the actual speed difference between 3G and HSDPA for browsing etc...is it worth spending 8900 on the nokia e5 which has 10.2 HSDPA and 3G "data only"(can someone tell me what this means) or should i stick to the e63, which has 3G and 3G video calling, and costs approx 7900?

hello friends... I'm using Samsung GT- b7610 Omnia pro.. bought it almost 15 months back.. i'm using airtel 3g. the quality of video calls is very good if u r in 3g network & its fun talking over video calls.... my phone has a 1.3mp VGA cam in front and it is always good to have lesser resolution cam in front as during video calls the image is very stable & real time....

Notice android 2.3 will support 3G video calling, not any previous version

If you want to have a entry level smart phone which have video calling facility and low cost then i think spice MI-350 is a good option

I am using HTC Desire S from 7 months, it's awesome phone. Has all the stuffs one needs, this includes front facing camera. Frequently use it for Skype video calling. In brief it has Android version 2.3.+, Dual Cam (Front +Primary), 1GHZ processor, Wifi, Edge, GPRS, GPS, Touch,32 gb external memory,1 gb internal memory, 700+ RAM..etc. For detailed specs, refer any review site. Over all a heavy duty stuff!!!
Costs around 25K..in India.
